How To Clean Your Home To Reduce Stress With Joy Cho, founder & Creative Director of Oh Joy!

Did you know your personal space effects your wellbeing?  Studies show that people with clean homes are healthier than people with messy ones. In fact, new research reveals that stress is a leading cause of chronic illness.  This means, it’s important to find as many ways as possible to reduce stress. And one of the easiest ways to make a change is to clean your home and keep it organized.

Think about it,  if you’re feeling unbalanced, take a look at your living space. Is it cluttered? Is your closet unorganized? Does it reflect how your mind feels? If the answer is ‘yes’  then it’s time to make a change. Since Spring is right around the corner, there’s no better time than now to do some spring cleaning.   I enlisted  Joy Cho, Founder & Creative Director of Oh Joy!, to share her secrets of how she balances her time as a mom & entrepreneur through meticulous organization.

Below are her tips in her words.

Implement A Schedule

Striving for work-life balance implies that there’s a level of perfection, which is just unattainable. It can be a lot of pressure to place on yourself as a parent. So instead, I like to think of it as more of a juggle. I have a few things that I try to do on a regular basis to make this juggle a little easier:

  • Implementing a schedule. I have a very structured schedule. I work 8:30AM-4:30PM and after, I’m with my kids.I typically try to organize, declutter and go through items to be donated when the kids are down for bed. It makes the process simpler since they’ll often panic when they see a toy being donated – even if they haven’t used it in two years! As a next step, I like to wipe down surfaces with Clorox Disinfecting Wipes to get rid of anything that’s accumulated before resetting items.

  • Ask for help and be comfortable delegating. With kids, this means not being afraid to ask for an extra set of hands or help from others when it comes to childcare . In business, delegation is key. You might want to handle it all, but giving someone else a shot gives you time to reprioritize your focus while allowing them to seize a new opportunity.

Upcycle & Create Storage

Within the home, it’s about setting up storage areas for things to make organizing and maintenance easier. We keep labeled bins and containers to help us not just keep toys and clutter away, but to make it easier to put things away too. I love upcycling, and with my colorful Clorox® Disinfecting Wipe designs, you can reuse the canister after the last wipe to hold everything from craft supplies to flowers! For keeping things clean, I like to use these wipes for spot cleaning. They’re cute, stylish and make it so much easier to clean on a regular basis. I leave them out on the counter and give my bathroom sink area a quick swipe every night rather than waiting until it gets really messy.

Add A Pop of Joy!

Bring a pop of color into your life. If you’re someone that likes color but might be afraid to wear it or put it into your home, I say give it a shot! Try a fun throw pillow to work your way up to a colorful chair.

If you can believe it, I used to dress in all black and grey when I lived in NYC. I came to really love color since moving to California. I feel like this is where I’m meant to be. It’s so simple how color can change your mood – whether your outfit is brightening your day or the day of a stranger you pass on the street. I have this fuchsia winter coat and every time I wear it, someone makes a comment – whether I know the person or not! When it’s cold and gloomy out, this unexpected pop just makes people happy. It’s fun and I just love how bursts of color can add joy to the everyday.

Joy explains that having a clean space is like a fresh slate. It sets the stage for your ideas and helps you feel mentally focused.  Feeling unbalanced and stress often a product of our environment, when we alter that we enhance our lives.  Joy is proof of this.  Check out more spring cleaning tips and design ideas Joy’s  blog here!
